Arthritis in Ayurveda
Arthritis is a term often used to classify any disorder that affects the joints of the body. Symptoms can often include joint pain and stiffness. Other symptoms may include redness, body swelling, feeling hot, and decreased range of motion in the affected joints.
In some types of arthritis, other organs in the body may also be affected gradually or suddenly.
There are over a hundred types of arthritis that can affect the human body. Of these many types of arthritis, the most common forms are rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease. Osteoarthritis affects the extremities of the body, i.e. the hips, fingers, and knees, while the autoimmune disease known as rheumatoid arthritis is best known to affect the hands and feet of the person.
Resting the affected joint or joints between uses, as well as practicing alternating between hot and cold, can help. Weight loss and light exercise can be beneficial – Hatha and aqua yoga would help with pain relief.
Osteoarthritis is estimated to affect over 4% of people, while rheumatoid arthritis affects around 0.24% in the western world. Statistically, the disease increases and becomes more important with age.

Arthritic joint pain mainly develops due to the accumulation of toxic materials which results in an imbalance of the three doshas. The result of this is the creation of pain and inflammation, especially in the joints, which creates and aggravates the condition known as arthritis or severe joint pain that occurs throughout the body.
